Carnitine is essential for the production of energy from fats, a process called fatty acid oxidation. Major body tissues, such as the heart and skeletal muscles, depend on fatty acid oxidation as a primary source of energy. L-Carnitine promotes proper fatty acid oxidation by transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy production. Also, L-Carnitine facilitates the metabolism of carbohydrates, enhances the rate of oxidative phosphorylation (ATP or energy production).L-Carnitine is a naturally occuring compound made in the body from the essential amino acid lysine and methionine. Although red meat is the best dietary source, each serving of Jarrow Formulas’ L-Carnitine 1000 contains the equivalent of 3.5 lbs of steak. L-Carnitine 1000 is naturally synthesized by microbiological fermentation and is not animal derived. L-Carnitine is necessary for proper fat metabolism and energy production, especially during protracted periods of aerobic exercise. Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) is added because it also is involved in the transport of fatty acids into the energy- production mitochondria.
